Call to Missions: Lithuania

After gaining independence in 1991,
Catholicism is once again becoming a part of life in Lithuania but much
work still needs to be done—especially in the area of
education. The people of Lithuania also need physical and spiritual help. Two
of us from the USA, and others from time to time,
offer the Lithuanian people support and guidance; we minister to
both the physical and spiritual needs of the people. We provide Catholics and
others the opportunity to meet and work with vowed religious women in their daily lives. Our Sisters are involved in youth projects, catechetics with children and their parents, religion classes are taught in a local school. Additionally, pastoral services are offered at the 45-bed St. Clare Hospice (www.subsventaklara.w3.lt) and the Sisters distribute over 200 food baskets each month to needy families.
One of the missions to which we were
first called, was ministering to the people in Lithuania in 1936 and, with the support of American Lithuanians, we managed a girls’ vocational school in Kaunas. By 1941, we were forced to leave
because of the rumblings of war. Even so, the country and the people
left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.
